I've never really enjoyed birthdays. Not that I can remember. Not mine, or anyone else's for that matter. I think the significance of the passage of time bothers me. As a mom of four, I know I've done a horrendous job celebrating birthdays over the years. It's just a flaw, on some deep psychological level, I'm sure. No one wants to be reminded that their life is expiring. But it is, and that is a humbling, exotic feeling.
Today, on my birthday, I'm reminded to live each day to its fullest. I'm reminded that life is short, that the clock is ticking, that no one lives forever. I'm reminded to dream big, to try hard, and to enjoy living! I'm reminded to be kind.
If nothing else, birthdays are a good time to stop and reflect, to evaluate our lives. To consider the legacy we're leaving behind. And while I know some people may not agree with my writing topics or style, I hope I can be remembered as someone who tried hard, someone who wasn't afraid to take chances or push limits, someone who was confident in her own skin.
