PRIDE

PRIDE

Let me tell you about someone. Twenty-two years ago, I met the most beautiful, amazing, unique individual. She and I were intertwined, an unbreakable love braiding us together into one of the most powerful bonds I've ever had the joy of experiencing. I've had the pleasure of watching her grow over the past twenty-two years, and while there were moments of angst for both of us, and times when we both made mistakes and felt unheard, she has taught me more about love than anyone else in my life. Together, I think we have both learned a great deal about forgiveness, trust, and the importance of being true to ourselves.

On August 30th, I will have the pleasure of watching her marry her best friend, just like I married mine fifteen years ago. The pride I will have as I watch her say 'I do' doesn't have anything to do with her sexual orientation. It doesn't have anything to do with her being a lesbian and marrying another woman. It has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that I am happy she is happy; I am proud of the person she is, the lessons she's learned with grace, and the caring, loving, snarky, and independent human she's become. Her choices are her choices, and I support them wholeheartedly because I support her!

I understand not everyone understands what real love looks like. I'm sure it's confusing to some. But it's not confusing to me. It's quite simple. Love is love. I am proud of her. I love her, and I will welcome her wife into our family with open arms. I love you, Jewel!
